HeadphonesHeadphones - There are three main types of headphones, ear bud, padded full ear and the more modern in-ear headphones, each have their own use and purpose.

Noise Cancelling Headphones. Providing information on how Noise Cancelling Headphones work and what exactly they do. This page also provides information on where they can be bought.

These type of headphones work by picking up external sounds on small microphones attached to the headphones and producing an inverted wave in the headphones to cancel those sounds, thereby eliminating them and making the headphones quieter.

Noise Cancelling Headphones.

There is a tendency for manufacturers to concentrate too hard on the noise cancelling part of the headphones, while ignoring the sound quality of the headphone drivers, so many noise cancelling headphones suffer from poor sound quality. The best can reduce external noise significantly, but a similar quietening effect is produced in closed can headphones without the added electronics, although closed cans suffer from resonance behind the headphone drivers, which also causes reduced sound quality.

Decent noise cancelling headphones produce high quality sound while blocking a significant level of background noise, but it is wise to be cautious about which headphones you buy as many are not worth the price in terms of actual sound quality. The ability of the noise cancelling headphones to eliminate background noise is also partially related to the stillness of the user and the consistency of the background noise. Moving around in a shifting audio environment may be less conducive to noise cancellation than sitting still in a constant environment, like an aeroplane. Noise cancelling headphones also require an extra power supply, usually in the form of batteries, to power the noise cancellation drivers.
