Radios. This page provides information about the history of radios from the first transmission at the end of the 19th century up to the present day where televisions dominate the market and new digital technology.

Radio has been developing constantly since the end of the 19th century, when the earliest scientific experiments into radio waves were conducted. From the simplest of transmitters and receivers radios developed into the very first devices to allow global communication over a few short decades. Ever since the first broadcasts, radios have been advancing and changing into the multitude of radio receiving products available today. From Hi-Fi systems to the ubiquitous free alarm clock radios, almost every person in the world now has access to a device which can be used to receive broadcasts from across the globe.

Some 20 years after the first radios appeared, television began to compete for attention in the arena of electrical home entertainment, but remained an expensive second choice for many years. Eventually television overtook radio in terms of popularity and ever since, radio has been growing less and less important in the hi-tech world. Recently TV and the rise of the internet have rendered radio obsolete in the more advanced areas of the world, but advances in technology have brought a possible radio revolution. The use of low-band frequencies and digital technology has brought about a significant change in the radio landscape, with Digital Radio Broadcasting able to provide many more channels of higher quality than analog transmissions.

It's hard to say how many radios there are available to buy thesedays, but even discounting hi-fi systems and all the things people have placed radios in, such as pens and alarm clocks there are still a huge range to choose from. The links below are to several online retailers where you can browse and compare radios to decide on the one for you.
